Buffalos help with school fees
In an interesting development, a herd of buffalo are now playing an important role in the sustainability of the Himaljyoti Community School in Nepal.
Stuck with the dilemma of how the poorest families can contribute towards their children’s education and help the school become independent, the local women’s co-operative came up with an innovative solution. The proposal – which the Saga Charitable Trust agreed to fund – was to buy 10 buffalo and use the income from milk, manure and calves to pay school fees. Over a period of two years, the family will repay the cost of each buffalo into a revolving fund, which can then be used to buy more animals, help more families and subsequently more children to be educated.
The buffalos are already in situ and doing their bit for the school!
