Saga Charitable Trust
Amaoti village, Kwa-Zulu Natal
Amaoti is an economically poor district of Inanda Township, near Durban, where unemployment is high and people are suffering from the physical, emotional and socio-economic effects of Aids.
A local farmer donated a piece of land to be used for the benefit of the community, and lacking resources and funds, community leaders turned to The Association for the Aged (TAFTA) for assistance to make their vision of a ‘village ’ for their most vulnerable members possible. The village is being developed to provide services for the elderly, disabled and orphans, to improve their quality of life and help them become self-reliant. This includes various levels of accommodation and also a community centre, which also serves as a pension pay point so that the elderly can collect their pensions in safety.
Within this complex, the SCT has funded a twin share cottage, to house grandparents caring for orphans affected by AIDS, and with funds raised from Saga Rose World Cruise in 2004, has established a much-needed market garden.
