New Brighton SDA School, Port Elizabeth
The New Brighton SDA School, located in the New Brighton Township, serves a previously disadvantaged community in Port Elizabeth, where unemployment is high and many of the residents live below the poverty line. The school really is a beacon of excellence and in the last few years, the schools intake has risen from 160 children to over 400, largely due to the drive and leadership of the Headmaster, Mr Silumesi.
The school caters for children from the ages of 3 to 16, with a recently introduced pre-reception class, and provides a very high standard of education in spite of financial and space constraints.
Over the past few years, with the support of the locally based Calabash Trust, the SCT has been able to help upgrade school facilities and set up a computer room, which has enabled IT classes to be introduced. The school has also received many gifts, including books for their library, from visiting Saga guests.
